This is part and parcel of the way male wrestlers and wrestling fans treat the women’s division.

Reblogged for Twig’s excellent commentary. I wish I could say I was surprised, that del Rio doesn’t seem like he’d be the type to disrespect a title like that, but you know, it’s the Divas belt. Nothing surprises me when it comes to how pervasive the misogyny is in wrestling and WWE in general.

To be fair, I’ve seen male wrestlers throw around title belts like that before - but usually they were their own belts, not somone else’s.

Not to mention the dude who was actually hurt by that kicked belt.

ETA: if, as other rebloggers have suggested, he’s trying to get heel heat (or even face heat), what’s the point? Del Rio’s not feuding with Ziggler.

I fucking HATEHATEHATE asshole things done by wrestlers being defended as them just trying to get heel heat. It’s like the worst excuse ever. There is NO POINT in Del Rio kicking that belt. As you say, Missy, Del Rio’s not feuding with Ziggler. Or even more salient yet, he’s not feuding with AJ Lee. What’s the point in disrespecting the championship of a division of which you’re not even a part of.

If he kicked ANY OTHER BELT, most reasonable fan would call this shit out and consider it disrespectful regardless of “trying to get heel heat.” But it’s the Divas belt, it’s a ladies belt, so whatever, right?

Chikara’s Watchmen and the Nature of Heroes

There have been five Chikara roster members (outside of Wink) that Condor has named in their tweets – Quack, Soldier, Icarus, Sabato, Archie. I think they make up a Chikara version of The Watchmen.¹ I want elaborate on the comparisons between the Watchmen characters and their Chikara counterparts in separate articles, but if I had to give you a quick one, I would say Quack is Ozymandias, Soldier is Nite Owl², Icarus is The Comedian, Sabato is Rorschach, and Archie is Dr. Manhattan.

The Watchmen is a very dense work, and like Chikara, you have to examine it more than once to pick up all the details and themes in it. One of the themes Watchmen looks at is how the line between hero and villain has become thinner over the years. Similarly, the world of Chikara seemed more black and white a few Seasons ago. It was easier to tell the rudos and a technicos, but near the end, the lines definitely became blurred. Rudos were acting like technicos (Icarus) and technicos were acting like rudos (Kingston.) In Watchmen, morals no longer separate heroes from villains, like in previous eras. With this new age, how do we tell the two apart? I think the key lies in their focus, with heroes looking to act with regard for others and the greater good, with villains looking to benefit and help only themselves.

A week after the events of Aniversario, whoever runs Condor’s twitter went on a rant about them all and asked if we believed in them:

“Do you believe in Mike Quackenbush? Who, despite being the patriarch of Chikara, left without a fight?”²

“Do you believe in Soldier Ant? He wasn’t able to confront the new missions assigned to him. Face the facts: He wasn’t AWOL. He is a deserter.”³

“Do you believe in Derek Sabato? That gaunt pest, who was the referee of the BDK, the liaison to Gekido, and now, he is some kind of martyr?”⁴

“Do you believe in Icarus? The worst in the world? The most booed man in history (even Nixon)? A colorful singlet made him a hero. Wow.”⁵

“And, for the Pièce de résistance… Do you really believe in Archibald Peck?”⁶

It reminds me of another theme in Watchmen. In the new era, heroes are imperfect. This is different from the days of comics like Superman and the earlier Seasons of Chikara. We might want to ignore, deny, or somehow justify the flaws of our heroes and make them seem perfect. However, to do so is to invalidate the very real scars and shadows that mark them. It’s akin to denying the triumphs, tragedies, and mistakes which define who they are. I think heroes are just like us in the sense that they are trying to live from day-to-day, dealing with their demons, and trying to make the best decisions they can. Does this stop us from worshiping them? Yes. Does this stop making us believe in them? No.
